IAFF Local 55 Calls Councilman “The Leader We Need to Prepare California for Wildfires and Ensure a Sustainable Future”
Union City, CA – Today, Democratic candidate for State Senate District 10 Scott Sakakihara announced that the Alameda County Firefighters (IAFF, Local 55) has endorsed his campaign.
In endorsing Sakakihara’s campaign, Aaron Lee, incoming President of the Alameda County Firefighters, Local 55 said: “With climate change leading to increasingly devastating wildfires throughout California, we need elected officials who get it. On the Union City Council, Scott Sakakihara has made sure the local fire department has the funding needed to keep the community safe. He has fought to prioritize emergency response training for local citizens. And he has made a real impact locally on climate. Scott Sakakihara is the leader we need to prepare California for wildfires and ensure a sustainable future for our state.”
“This endorsement is one of the most important in the race for State Senate,” said Scott Sakakihara. “Our firefighters are true, dedicated, and brave public servants who put their lives on the line every day for all of us. I am honored by the Alameda County Firefighters’ vote of confidence in me and I look forward to working with them in Sacramento to address the twin challenges facing California and our broader world: climate change and the ever increasing threat of wildfire.”
The Alameda County Firefighters join a broad and growing coalition of supporters backing Sakakihara’s campaign, including former Assemblymember Bill Quirk, Alameda County Assessor Phong La, Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez, Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, former Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, former San Jose Councilmember Don Rocha, and more.
