REP. MIKE HONDA ENDORSES SCOTT SAKAKIHARA FOR SENATE DISTRICT 10

Progressive Icon Joins Firefighters and Local Mayors in Backing Councilmember’s Surging Campaign

(Union City, CA) – Today, Democratic candidate for State Senate District 10 Scott Sakakihara announced that former Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) has endorsed his campaign.

“Mike Honda is a progressive icon who I have long admired,” said Scott Sakakihara. “His legacy will inspire my work in the State Senate, to create a safe, vibrant, and sustainable future for our kids that is worthy of the promise of our great state.”

Like Sakakihara’s grandparents, Rep. Honda was sent to a Japanese American internment camp during World War 2. He was just one year old at the time. His family later became sharecroppers in San Jose.

Rep. Honda served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, then spent 30 years as a teacher and principal in the South Bay. He served on the San Jose Unified School Board, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, in the California Assembly, in Congress, and as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee. In Congress, he was a leader in the fight for human rights, affordable healthcare, a higher minimum wage, and a stronger public education system. He secured more than a billion dollars in federal funding for the Bay Area.

“Mike Honda’s endorsement is a major statement about where our progressive campaign is headed,” said Sakakihara.

Rep. Mike Honda joins a broad and growing coalition of supporters backing Sakakihara’s campaign, including the Alameda County Firefighters Local 55, former Assemblymember Bill Quirk, Alameda County Assessor Phong La, Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez, Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, former Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, former San Jose Councilmember Don Rocha, and more.
